The 8-Bit Guy
United States
Приєднався 25 лип 2006
A computer video series focusing mainly on retro technology from the 80s, 90s and 2000s. However, once or twice a year I'll create something totally "out there." My main goal at this point is to make educational content about retro technology that is interesting and engaging. Some people will be re-living their childhood, while others will be experiencing the technology for the first time.

The guy really just said no fpga(s) but then he is using a gameduino that uses an FPGA
Bet u don’t try that sh!t in 2024😂😂😂😂
I really liked my Gameboy pocket, but it suddenly felt like junk after I got a second one and did the backlight mod to it. But in turn, my backlit one suddenly felt like junk after I got another and fitted an IPS screen in it (well, "robbed it of it's motherboard and fitted all new stuff around it" is a more accurate description of what I did. :) ). The IPS screen upgrade is just so much better than the original. The original screen has horendiously motion blur, and even with the backlight and bivert mods they still really show their age. The IPS screen's night and day better. I've currently got 8 GB Pockets, 2 have IPS screens, 5 are backlit, and one is completely original. Both the IPS one's have the "Alberto Gil Tesa" USB-C Charging Kits and 1000mAh Li-Po's fitted (A great mod to go with the power hungry screen), 3 of the backlit one's have Li-Po mods as well, using generic TP4056 charging module. Once the USB socket's removed it fits almost perfectly in the top shell between the D pad and B button to shine it's charge status LED's through the thin plastic of the top shell (It looks especially good on a transparent blue case I've got on one). 2 of those have the bivert mod, One of the others has a drop in Li-Po and charger kit that all fits in the (Modified) battery compartment, and the last backlit and the totally standard one have the normal 2x AAA arrangement......... As you can see, I have a bit of a thing for Gameboy Pockets. :D The trouble is, my standard one, and all the backlit ones don't get used anymore. I cleaned them right up with isopropyl alcohol, removed the batteries, and they're all now in Ziploc bags with a few silica gel sachets in each. Once you've experienced the crystal clear sharpness of an IPS screen on one of these, the stock screen (Backlit or not) feels barely fit for purpose ! All I can say is, if you still get that happy nostalgic feeling from playing on your stock or backlit stock Gameboy Pocket, don't even LOOK at one kitted out with an IPS screen, let alone play on it if offered. It'll ruin the whole original experience for you ! It would be like continuing to bang your clothes against a rock in the river to wash them while knowing full well that automatic and reasonably affordable cloths washing machines exist ! :D
No, it didn't.
THAT IS A C128 NOT A C64 WHY IS ONONE SAYING ANYTHING
loved the commodore history playlist and learned a LOT abt commodore i didnt know (i didnt know anything btw) 😂and i just now realized that u always use a different tune for the outro (which is all around great designed. i love it) anyway, i wanted to thank u very much for ur effort and research on all of this. peace yo, stay chillin
Apple knew, even in 1977, that if you get kids hooked on your product early, you'll have customers for life.
I might try this with a sous vide :)
I wish Mirco Center and a store in east isilp or bay shore bc I don’t feel like some times going all the way to west bury from east isip
Learned a lot from this one. One question I have… if colour and graphics modes are modelled on the graphic card, why do the monitors differ? What is the limitation there? Thanks.
What a piece of junk.
how about 17 years later?
Would have been nice if the top part that opened on the original had a USB port inside where the USB memory stick could plug into.
Tl;dr it ened up costing a LOT more than the raspi.
MULE was a great game! Wife and I used to spend hours in. front of our old C=128 playing this game, of course in the 64 mode. Another game MOSAIC which I typed in from the pages of RUN magazine using the machine language monitor was a favorite of my wife. I wonder, the little esp32 VGA board has an ATARI emulator for it, perhaps that is what is inside this little device.
maintaining charge would be easy enough here, our speed limit is around 68mph
3:15 eeeeeuuwww
@ 8 bit guy...or anyone else Did you know that instead of that security cam they make usb webcams where you can remove the bayer filter and make it b/w so you dont have to cart a genny around to power it?
Man! I used to own a b/w quickcam in the late 90s. The color one was pretty crappy but it was color! I put it off again and again waiting for the price of about 300 bones to come down then usb came along and the ol reliable printer port and keyboard plug got phased out so i never bought it. Im gonna find my goodwill webcam that i wrecked the color filter on and try this.
0:14 lol this was my first computer. Till I sold it for c64..
atari 800xl was a great machine. and encounter was a great game
Thanks for the vid! Waiting to get out of the hospital before I try my Atari 400. Looking forward to it!

8 years ago "Nearly have 200k subscribers" 1.43M subs as of this writing, congrats 8-Bit Guy! :)
I had a lot of fun with Star Raiders, but I'm curious how you'd play that without the keyboard. Maybe they gave it some kinda menuing system. ... Ah, ok, you plug your own keyboard in.
They should do an Atari St mini after this.

hi from 2024, HDDs are still commonly used but it's also very common to not find them in new computers.
I love how the 8 bit guy always shows us chucking unwanted items in to the trash can😅

Just a quibble. Maybe a question. Not to do with the 6502. But I thought disco had peeked in 1978, certainly later than '75. That year, if memory serves, it was just revving up.
Considering my childhood was all Atari computers, I am astounded that the only pack-in games I actually played were Missile Command and Miner 2049er, despite owning like 100+ games. Just goes to show how big the library really was
Thanks for allowing blaze to put your game on the evercade 8 bit guy now it gives me a excuse to buy the computer games for the system!
Fantastic! 🍀
Your video is 5 years old now but is invaluable as I work to restore my Compaq Plus. I was able to get it to boot using a Gotek with Flashfloppy (360K or 720K images) but as you found, the keyboard is 100% dead.
At DeVry Phoenix in 1984 we used the original TRS-80 with 32K ROM upgrades performed by DeVry that turned these into Z80 Op Code programers, compilers, loader, testers for use in the Z80 micro computer class/lab.
Would a nail UV curing lamp work?
Hi 8 bit guy. I'm trying to find out the smallest home computer with video, in the 1970's and in the 1980's, world wide, and the first home computer capable of 80 column text with a colour palette of at least 8 colours (not the 2 colour Exidy and 4 colour QL). Would you be able to share? I've discovered the new brain, and Seiko 2000 watch, and there are pocket computers. But none fit what I'm looking at. The only ones that seem to, are early business machines in the 1980's, like the PC, one better PC like British machine (forget the name) and Peach, and Amstrad CPC. Which is a bit shocking. Apple 111, hmm. You would have thought somebody would have done it earlier. Thanks.
1:08 almost looks like a marble finish texture or whatever it’s called
I went to a tech collage and they required use to by sharp PC1401 pocket computer. It was pretty pricy at a $120 dollars considering tuition for the year was about $1500. All fine and dandy until the first math exam rolled around and they said we could not use them because you could enter notes into the computer memory. We argued that you required us to but the computer/calculator then we should be able to use it. Students won that one and sharing note took on a whole new meaning after that. One teacher tried to mess thing up by having a test question that required the use of a program to solve a question. The exam was 90 min long and your calculator was tied up running the program for 70 min. Saw that one coming and dragged out a second PC 1401 that a store had loaned me. Aced that exam. (Also had picked up a room mate that was working on his PHD in mathematic, He went on to be a professor and was one of the best teacher the math department had)
awesome
